Airports in Greece

Greece has 15 international airports, most of which are located on the islands and in major cities. These airports can be reached via direct scheduled flights by major airlines, specialized carriers, and charter flights.

During the summer months, due to increased passenger traffic, airlines adjust their operations: they execute additional flights to existing destinations and add new ones. Therefore, it is recommended to get information from airlines or your travel agent before booking.

From the various airports, there are connections to all parts of Greece, making trips from them to the rest of the country simple and convenient. Flight prices to Greece are generally very reasonable, especially if booked in advance.

There are four types of airports in Greece:

Major Gateways to Greece

These are the largest airports serving as the main entry points to the country, from where travelers continue to other destinations via domestic flights or ferries.

  • Athens (ATH – Eleftherios Venizelos): The most central and important airport. Almost every tourist arriving from afar (USA, Asia, etc.) will pass through here, making it the connectivity hub for all the islands.
  • Thessaloniki (SKG – Macedonia): The gateway to Northern Greece (Halkidiki, Kastoria, etc.). This is a very important airport for winter tourism, culinary tours, and road trips in the north of the country.

Major Gateways During Tourist Season

These airports receive hundreds of charter and direct flights from across Europe and the world during the tourist season (April–October).

  • Crete (Airports HER – Heraklion and CHQ – Chania): The largest island with massive tourist traffic.
  • Rhodes (RHO): One of the most sought-after destinations for “All-Inclusive” style vacations.
  • Corfu (CFU): The gateway to the Ionian Islands and classic European tourism.
  • Kos (KGS) and Zakynthos (ZTH): Distinct vacation destinations for young people and families.

Boutique and Luxury Destination Airports

Relatively small airports in terms of infrastructure, but of immense tourist importance due to the reputation of the islands.

  • Santorini (JTR) and Mykonos (JMK): Although these are small airports, they receive direct flights from European capitals—making them central for luxury tourism.
  • Skiathos (JSI): Very popular thanks to its beautiful beaches (and the famous runway which is very close to the sea).
  • Paros (PAS) and Naxos (JNX): Islands rising in tourist popularity, though their airports are still small and mainly serve domestic flights or small aircraft.

Local Airports

These are airports that the average tourist will usually reach only via a connecting flight from Athens. They are important for those seeking a more authentic and quiet Greek experience.

  • Remote Islands (such as Kastellorizo, Astypalaia, or Chios): For travelers wanting to get away from the crowds.
  • Milos (MLO): An island that has become a very trendy destination in recent years.
  • Karpathos (AOK): A beloved destination for travelers seeking peace and quiet.
  • Kefalonia (EFL) and Lefkada (Aktion – PVK): Airports serving spectacular nature regions.
